The world's best defenders are the reason behind the ultimate success of top European Cups 2016/17 season. The clubs from Spain, Italy, Germany dominated the defender chart.

Marcelo
Marcelo is a Brazilian professional footballer for Spanish club Real Madrid and the Brazil national team. He plays mainly at left back but can also operate as a left winger.
He has always been a menacing and attacking presence who link-up play with Cristiano Ronaldo is the key on-field partnership for the Spanish and European title favorites. He improves every season and is now irreplaceable at Real Madrid. 

Leonardo Bonucci
Leonardo Bonucci is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Serie A club Juventus and the Italian national team.
 His technique, ball-playing ability and defensive performances alongside fellow Italian centre-back Andrea Ranocchia earned him a move to Juventus the following season, where he later became a key member of the club's three-man defensive line, alongside Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli, establishing himself as one of the best defenders in world football. He went on to win six consecutive Serie A titles with the team between 2012 and 2017.

Phillip Lahm
Phillip Lahm is a German former professional footballer who played as a right back or defensive midfielder and spent much of his early career playing left back.
He was the captain of Bayern Munich, having skippered them to numerous honours including the 2013 UEFA Champions League as part of the Treble. He is also a former captain of his national team, which he led to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, before retiring from international football. Lahm is c.onsidered by many to be one of the best full backs of his generation

Sergio Ramos
Sergio Ramos is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for and captains both, Real Madrid and the Spain national football team.
A central defender, he can also play as a right back. As captain, talisman and aerial predator for Real Madrid, he is one of the world's most influential players as a defender. Ramos went on to become a mainstay for Real Madrid where he has won 15 major honours and developed into one of La Liga's top scorers from a defensive position.

Diego Godin
Diego Godin is a Uruguayan professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Atlético Madrid and the Uruguay national team as a central defender.
He spent most of his professional career in Spain, representing Villarreal and Atlético Madrid and winning six major titles with the latter. An Uruguayan international since 2005, Godín appeared for the country at two World Cups and four Copa América tournaments, winning the 2011 edition of the latter competition.

Gerard Pique
Gerard Pique is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for FC Barcelona and the Spain national team.
 He is one of four players to have won the UEFA Champions League two years in a row with different teams, the others being Marcel Desailly, Paulo Sousa and Samuel Eto'o. He has the heft and muscles required of a centre-back even when his team's ethos is som heavily weighted towards graceful movement and possession,and the style,skill and intelligence to sit deep and strke the ball around.

Dani Alves
Dani Alves is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a right back for Italian club Juventus and the Brazil national team.
He is widely regarded as one of the best full-backs of his generation. He won the Treble in his first season with the club and in the next season he won the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Additionally, he helped the club to clinch another two Spanish Super Cups, five league titles and two UEFA Champions League in the years that followed.

Giorgio Chiellini
Giorgio Chiellini is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Serie A club Juventus and the Italian national team.
A physically strong, aggressive, and versatile defender, although he is usually deployed as a centre-back, he is also capable of playing as a left-back, both in a three or four-man defence. With Juventus, he has won six consecutive Serie A titles from 2012 to 2017, as well as three consecutive Coppa Italia titles, and three Supercoppa Italiana titles. He made his international debut for Italy in 2004, and has since earned over 90 caps.

Thiago Silva is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a central defender for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazilian national team.

Jerome Boateng is a German professional footballer who plays as a defender for German club Bayern Munich and the Germany national team.
A versatile defender, Boateng primarily is a centre-back, although he can also play as a right-back. Physically strong and composed in possession, he has garnered a reputation as a tough-tackling defender, with good passing and an ability to read the game, and is considered to be one of the world's best at his position.
